The existing City of Oviedo Police Department building is currently at capacity and is not functionally adequate to efficiently address the City's needs. The current building cannot be expanded to adequately provide for the Department's current space needs estimated at 21,000 square feet or future anticipated space needs estimated at 26,000 square feet. This deficiency was identified in a Space Needs Analysis which was performed in May of 2006 and was recently updated.
In December of 2009, the City issued a Request for Qualifications for Design Services for a new Police Headquarters Building to replace the existing Police headquarters. The City's evaluation team reviewed the responses, interviewed several short-listed firms and recommended that Architects Design Group be selected for design. The recommendation was approved by City Council on March 15th and the City is in the process of finalizing contract documents, negotiating the fees and Scope of Services with the Contractor.
Authorization by City Council is necessary in order to proceed with the Preliminary Design Phase. This was presented to City Council at their June 7, 2010 meeting, but the issue will be re-evaluated at a future Council meeting.
