Oviedo Declares Local State of Emergency

The Division of Forestry for the State of Florida has declared an extreme fire danger presence due to the elevated status of drought conditions and lack of rainfall for Seminole County, including the City of Oviedo. The elevated status of drought conditions, lack of sustained rainfall, and the current climate conditions may result in a significant wildfire threat that presents an immediate danger to persons, buildings, property, transportation, open land and more.

The City, finding that in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the City’s residents and businesses, the Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director recommended the City, by legislative authority, implement a declaration of a Local State of Emergency within the corporate limits of the City of Oviedo. The Local State of Emergency for the City of Oviedo was ordered the 2nd day of May, 2012 and shall continue in effect for a period of thirty (30) days and may be extended, as necessary, in thirty (30) day increments until the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, or a quorum of the City Council terminates the Local State of Emergency.

The declaration prohibits burning for any and all normally approved fire activity. At this time of extreme fire danger, please consider the consequences of fire from sources such as fire pits, barbeque grills and cigarettes disposed of from your vehicle. These may seem harmless, however due to the extreme dry conditions each could have devastating effects or our city. The Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director of the City, or his designee, shall be granted authority to take prudent actions to enforce this prohibition of burning.

If you have questions or concerns, please call the fire administration offices at 407-971-5611.
